Universities face a special obstacle in turning to a multimodal literacy, as the written text is the very basis of scientific and scholarly knowledge. We have very few examples of multimodal research papers.
There is a hidden tradition to be found there: Galileo and Leonardo's writings. The history of scientific figures (see Gandelman's book). The history of visual displays of numbers (Tufte's realm). Video ethnography. Museums. But this is the kitchen stairs. The main entrance is paved in writing.
